We went blueberry picking yesterday at the Cedar Grove Blueberry Farm (plug), where the pick-your-own blueberries are only $2 a pound. My toddler is a fiend for blueberries. If we lived in a post-apocalyptic society where there was nothing to eat but blueberries, he would be perfectly happy. So blueberry picking seemed like a good idea for a family activity.

Blueberries!
At first, all was fine. There were trees and grass to run around on and rotten apples to pick up and squish. He didn’t notice that we were anywhere special. Then we made the mistake of feeding him a blueberry off one of the bushes.

Gimme!
OMG THOSE ROUND THINGS GROWING ALL AROUND ARE BLUEBERRIES!!! Up until now, he had believed blueberries grew in plastic containers in the refrigerator. But here, in blueberry heaven, he could eat as many as he could get his hands on, with no pesky refrigerator door in the way. He didn’t care that some were not technically blue, but rather green and pink and white. He’s only one year old; he doesn’t know his colors yet. BLUEBERRIES!
Then he noticed Mommy’s bucket, which was so much more convenient than the bushes because he could two-fist the blueberries. Whaddya mean, we have to pay for them first? He can’t be bothered with such material concerns.
Frustration, then tears, then a trip to Maple View for ice cream ensue. (I highly recommend the peach ice cream, by the way; it is out-of-this-world delicious right now.)
Oh well, maybe we’ll try again next year. And we still got away with two pounds of blueberries. Enough to feed a blueberry-mad toddler for 2 or 3 days, at least.
